Mattress depths vary from about 9" to more than 16", so measure your bed and set the drop to suit.
Questions
How big should a queen quilt be?
A queen mattress is 60" × 80". With a 12" drop on each side and a 10" pillow tuck, the quilt is about 84" × 102". For a coverlet that just covers the top and sides, use a smaller drop.
How much bigger than the quilt top should the backing be?
Longarm quilters usually ask for 4" extra on every side (8" wider and longer). For quilting on a home machine, 2–3" per side is enough.
How wide should binding strips be?
2½" is the most common width for double-fold binding. Use 2¼" for a narrower finish or thin batting.
Does the calculator account for shrinkage?
No. If you prewash, buy about 5% extra for cotton fabrics.
