Questions

How do I calculate how many stitches to cast on?

Knit a swatch, count the stitches in 4 inches, and divide by 4 to get stitches per inch. Multiply by the width you want. At 18 stitches per 4", a 20" wide piece needs 90 stitches.

How do I increase evenly across a row?

Divide the stitches you have by the number of increases to get the section length, then increase after each section. For 80 stitches and 12 increases, that's sections of 7 and 6 stitches.

Does this work for crochet?

Yes. Use your crochet gauge in the cast-on tab to find the starting chain count, and the increase/decrease tab for spreading shaping evenly.
